Wicked the musical is the stage adaptation of the Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. This novel is a re-telling of the classic L Frank Baum novel The Wizard of Oz. the Gregory Maguire novel tells the same story as the L. Frank Baum novel, however, it is told through the prospective of the witches of the Land of Oz.
The novel was adapted for stage by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman and first premiered in San Francisco in 2003 before moving to New York’s Broadway later that same year.
The musical gained a lot of attention whilst on Broadway and in 2004 it was nominated for ten Tony Awards and gained the awards for Best Actress, Costume Design and Scenic Design. After three successful years of Broadway, ‘Wicked’ opened in London’s West End at the Apollo Victoria Theatre where it still runs today.
The opening on the West End broke records as Wicked reached the box office highest selling musical in opening week and grossed over £100,000 in the first hour that tickets went on sale. Wicked has carried the same success on and the Apollo Victoria still has high demand for cheap Wicked tickets.
