Stomp

Location: New Ambassadors Theatre

Bin lids, matchboxes, lighters, wheel trims, keys, brooms, work boots and beer cans. All of these objects have something in common – they are all musical instruments.

That’s right. Thanks to the ever popular Stomp, all kinds of regular household items are considered musical instruments, particularly in the hands of the talented individuals who have brought this show to the stage.

Created by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas, Stomp is the worldwide sensation that has been seen in cities as far reaching as Sydney and Barcelona to countries such as Brazil and Hong Kong. But it all started at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London, a location that saw eight performers take to the stage and wow crowds with their truly unique show. Since then, those eight performers have blossomed into more than thirty, making the show an epic ensemble of performing talent.

So many people ask, what is Stomp? The answer can vary from person to person, but if you were to ask the show itself, they would describe their production as a percussive stage performance. This sums it up rather well, but it does not factor in the way in which they create such percussion, for instead of using drums like most shows it opts for ordinary household items – objects that most of us would never have thought of using in a musical setting. This is why bin lids make great cymbals and all kinds of sounds come from the unlikeliest of sources. However, they also manage to combine all of this with other great elements to make a worthwhile production, such as skilful choreography, resulting in dance routines that bring all of these things together. As well as being a percussive stage performance, we could also add the word energetic there somewhere, as well as amazing. The hard work of Cresswell and McNicholas have put into it is evident right on stage and was the result of ten years of collaboration that began in the early 1980s.

As well as all around the world, Stomp can also be seen right at home under the roof of London’s Ambassadors Theatre, but it has also been witnessed all over Great Britain in cities such as and Edinburgh and beyond.

So make sure you catch the world famous Stomp – it is a decision you won’t regret.
