The Cage Aux Folles is a play, a film and a musical all thanks to the talented writing of Jean Poiret. He wrote the play in 1973 and was an instant hit with audiences. The success of the play led to the release of a film version in 1978 which became America’s most successful foreign film at that time.
The modern classic show is currently playing at the Playhouse Theatre for a limited period which has resulted in tickets selling out quickly. You would be well advised to book tickets to La Cage Aux Folles well in advance in order to avoid disappointment.
The show tells the story of a gay couple, George and Albin, which have been together for over twenty years. However, when George’s son announces his engagement to the daughter of a very conservative family, things begin to get rather rocky. George and Albin are forced to compromise not only their lifestyle but their business and self as well which enviably causes resentment between the couple. The play is famous for the witty humour which runs parallel to the negativities of an unforgiving society which is presented through George’s son’s fiancée and her family.
