Alan Bennett has been described as a British sensation in playwriting for some years now. His work is both entirely honest and brutal whilst remaining totally hysterical. He grew up in a small town area of Leeds which provided him with a background for one of his major hit shows; ‘Enjoy’.
Alan Bennett wrote the play in 1980 but critics were unimpressed and the show failed to run for longer than seven weeks. This major failure was rare for Bennett as his work includes great successes such as The History Boys. The History Boys won three Laurence Olivier Awards for performances in London’s West End and six Tony Awards for performances in New York’s Broadway shows.
The show was also made into a hit film in 2006. Bennett himself received a Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Contribution to Theatre. A 2008, revived version, tour of Enjoy was received much better and critics began to praise the show. The show then moved to the West End’s Gielgud Theatre on 27th January 2009 where it has been greatly successful ever since. The show now has critics raving about it as it creates a similar buzz amongst British audiences as Bennett’s previous works.
