Avenue Q

Avenue Q is the 25th longest running musical in the history of Broadway for a reason. The Sesame Street inspired musical is set on the streets of New York City and involves puppet characters in the style of the cult children’s television show. The hysterical comedy uses satirical spoofs of characters from Sesame Street as the basis of their characters.

The seemingly innocent show is an adult version of the children’s television show with ‘grown up’ songs such as the You Tube sensation ‘the internet is for porn’ and ‘If you were gay’. The story includes scenes containing racism and homosexuality. There are also sex scenes within the musical and strong language throughout.

The controversial show is not for those that are easily offended as it takes a comical approach to delicate social issues. However, despite its controversies ‘Avenue Q’ has been a massive success on Broadway and has gained the same level of success on the West End since its opening in 2006. Tickets for the West End show are a must as it is once again showing in London theatres. The production in Noel Coward Theatre is not one to be missed, especially with the wider availability of cheap theatre tickets!
